Session 1 Introducing Microgardens

OVERVIEW: Very simple microgardens can help a family overcome poverty and hunger. The garden provides foods that fresh vegetables that can help children become healthy and defeat some diseases caused by poor diet or lack of food. A good diet with vegetables helps children remain healthy and not get some illnesses.

PURPOSE: To show how the microgardens, or simplified hydroponics can help a family remain healthy.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand that lack of food can causes illness
  2. Understand that some foods are needed for children to remain healthy
  3. Understand that a good diet keeps children healthy

RESOURCES/MATERIALS: The students each draw children and show the illnesses that can happen when their is not enough food, or the right types of food.

RESOURCES:
Nutrients in foods
Nutrition needed for people
Calories, protein and fat in foods
Amino acids in food
Comic Book on harvesting foods

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

  1. Present the slides for garden introduction and poor diets
  2. Take time for questions from the students or comments
  3. Have each student make a list of the foods each child should have every day
  4. Determine what diseases might be prevented with good foods
  5. Meet for a review of the material

TYING IT TOGETHER: At the end of the session, the student should have an understanding of the need for vegetables to prevent illnesses.
